Cowboy Bepop is in the index, but Speed Racer and Astro Boy are not. And while we're at it, Inuyasha is included in the text and index but not the iCM list.
I have the book as well. The way Cowboy Bebop is mentioned is typical of how most movies in the book are mentioned. It's almost pure name dropping, definitely a book that goes for quantity over quality - not in terms of the quality of the movies, but in how the book treats the movies.

If you really cared about your fellow obsessive checkers, you would know what to do: you need to invent a time machine and arrange for everybody who's interested to use it to go back and see the film on original release. Duh, it's obvious.

No.

Reddit hasn't created a new thread for an update to their list yet.
FOK! hasn't created a new thread for an update to their list, and the most recent attempt in December didn't seem to take off, so they might not do one this year.

No problem with that, actually. Other lists stay the same for a few years or .. forever. :satstunned:

That's not a discussion that's been had. Personally I don't see that as necessary at this point. Perhaps if they stop updating the list completely, but skipping a year or two isn't a big deal IMO, especially this past year. A lot of regular things just haven't happened because of the pandemic. Plus, FilmTotaal showed a steady decline in participation before being discontinued, which is what I understand was a major factor in that list being reverted. I don't think Reddit or FOK have had big declines in participation (Reddit I think has even grown), so if either did just stop completely I don't think we'd necessarily revert to the first list. But all this is cart before the horse. We'll see what those two sites do in the future.

the Time Out's The 100 Best French Films list source has been a mess for a while, why not change it to the other source? At least, it would update the list.

I found the source to confirm, so this is now done.

https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/mar ... abian+sea/ won the Golden Lotus last week. It's a Malayalam film (so the title will hopefully get updated on imdb), and it hasn't even been released yet (I suppose they must have advanced/private screenings for the voting body). I had to import it to icm.

flavo5000 wrote: March 23rd, 2021, 3:00 pm Ok, so I've skimmed through the book and wanted to summarize what I think should be the proposed updates to the Asian Cinema list:
[*]Add Cowboy Bebop (1998) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0213338/)
It's in the index and given a paragraph in the book like many of the films already in the list.
[*]Add Godzilla (1954) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047034/)
In the index and given it's own mini-section
[*]Remove Gumnam (1954) and add Gumnaam (1965) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0247394/
I think this was just a simple case of adding the wrong movie.
[*]Add Kashmir Ki Kali (1964) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058257/
In the index and also discussed in a special section dedicated to actress Sharmila Tagore
[*]Add Memoirs of a Geisha https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397535/
In the index and mentioned in two separate special sections discussing the actors Gong Li and Koji Yakusho
[*]Bu jian a.k.a. The Missing (2003) https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/bu+jian/
Not in the index but is discussed in a special section on Lee Kang-Sheng and given more of a write-up that some films on the list and in the index.

Iffy on these:
[*]Inuyasha (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290223/)
It is in the index but is only mentioned in passing as a TV series for children. "Even series aimed at kids, like Inuyasha, feature labyrinthine plots that confound their elders."
[*]Green Hornet TV series (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059991/)
Also in the index but also just mentioned in passing in the section discussing Bruce Lee's career.
[*] Ringu: Final Chapter (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235134/)
Not in the index but mention in the same section as the other Ringu sequels that are in the list
[*}Confession of Pain https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0834902/
Not in the index but briefly discussed in the section talking about Infernal Affairs
On a non-April Fools note, I finished reading the Asian Cinema book yesterday and the above were all the observations I was about to find. Mods, what are your thoughts on the "iffy" ones?

PA does that now and then, but not very often, because it doesn't change that much.
I think after 3 months it's reasonable to update the list. There's a new number 1.

Feels like going back to the 90's when I used to watch MTV top charts on sundays: "Come back after the break to see the new number one song!"

Does anyone know why the list on iCM is a top 50? They present a top 150 on that forum.

Does anyone know why the list on iCM is a top 50? They present a top 150 on that forum.
That's the complete list with all the movies that got votes in case you guys want to expand the list to the same lenght of the BFI's or something. :guns:

I feel like it's good for some lists to be short.

While I agree, one has to worry what's going to happen to Ron Jensen if he ever checks everything.

flavo5000 wrote: March 23rd, 2021, 3:00 pm Ok, so I've skimmed through the book and wanted to summarize what I think should be the proposed updates to the Asian Cinema list:
[*]Add Cowboy Bebop (1998) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0213338/)
It's in the index and given a paragraph in the book like many of the films already in the list.
[*]Add Godzilla (1954) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047034/)
In the index and given it's own mini-section
[*]Remove Gumnam (1954) and add Gumnaam (1965) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0247394/
I think this was just a simple case of adding the wrong movie.
[*]Add Kashmir Ki Kali (1964) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058257/
In the index and also discussed in a special section dedicated to actress Sharmila Tagore
[*]Add Memoirs of a Geisha https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397535/
In the index and mentioned in two separate special sections discussing the actors Gong Li and Koji Yakusho
[*]Bu jian a.k.a. The Missing (2003) https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/bu+jian/
Not in the index but is discussed in a special section on Lee Kang-Sheng and given more of a write-up that some films on the list and in the index.

Iffy on these:
[*]Inuyasha (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290223/)
It is in the index but is only mentioned in passing as a TV series for children. "Even series aimed at kids, like Inuyasha, feature labyrinthine plots that confound their elders."
[*]Green Hornet TV series (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059991/)
Also in the index but also just mentioned in passing in the section discussing Bruce Lee's career.
[*] Ringu: Final Chapter (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235134/)
Not in the index but mention in the same section as the other Ringu sequels that are in the list
[*}Confession of Pain https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0834902/
Not in the index but briefly discussed in the section talking about Infernal Affairs
When you say they're in the index, what type of index is that?
The index mostly seems to include films mentioned in a notable way of some kind. Although like I pointed out above, there are a couple of movies that aren't explicitly in the index but still given about the same amount of discussion as films that are in the index.
