Twist stars Michael Caine as a modern Fagin. It’s terrible but amazing leaping across London Roofs by the youngsters in the film. It also stars someone called Rita Ora who is some kind of singer apparently.

I've gotten a few of the Sundance movies. Don't remember which ones, specifically. I know I had the first check on CODA, a film that will likely be quite popular even though I was heavily mixed on it.

Man, I'm not even a Sono buff, but as an avid Cage maniac (with 60+ seen films) I envy you big time.

Huge Sono fanboy here, seen all his movies. I also went on a Cage marathon recently just in preparation for this movie (50+movies seen!).
Hoping for someone to upload it somewhere. :folded:

A substantial, arty item, presumably with plenty of appeal to this demographic...very surprised that I'm the first check. I've had the David Byrne soundtrack album for over 30 years and realized that I never saw the accompanying dance production. It's not marvelous -- the music (which I love) is far more compelling than the dance. It's difficult to decipher the narrative, but it essentially seems to be about strife within a nuclear family and their housekeeper. Pineapples are a recurring prop, seemingly representing the atomic bomb. Everyone's fighting over the pineapples. This doesn't seem to be the mere document of a live production, though almost all the material takes place on a raw stage.

Now that I've seen this, I kinda wish I could add it to my <50 ballot.

Well, I have few dreams of any of my choices landing in the top 250, so it's mostly about imagining what films I could push onto the "complete" poll list.

I'm well-aware of a pattern of my least common checks being skewed toward music, but I'm astounded that this site has been around for 12-ish years and I'm the very first one to check the early Bee Gees movie "Cucumber Castle" (1970). It's like their "Magical Mystery Tour" in theory. But the quirky thing is that Robin had quit the group at the time, so only Barry and Maurice appear. It's a medieval-knight fantasy, where Barry and Maurice are prince brothers whose dying father (the excruciating Frankie Howerd) has recently divided his kingdom in two and given half to each brother. But the story goes nowhere, and the humor is horribly broad. It's literally on the level of, whoops, I leaned too far back in my chair and fell over. And even the songs aren't so good. Teen-idol singer Lulu (then Maurice's wife) also appears to sing two songs, including S&G's "Mrs. Robinson" (which really makes no sense at all in context of the story). Still, it's an interesting pop-culture curio.

The film is casually available on YouTube. Just 55 minutes.

I've gotten a couple of first checks lately on avant-garde shorts, but I don't remember which ones and I don't feel like it's worth looking up. I'll never have another one as impressive as CODA or Malcolm and Marie.

Your history says you're the only check for 31 films, but of course there may be a few others where you were first and others followed.

Also, I think I'm going to watch your "Mixed-Double," just because it sounds cool and is from my favored era.:)

I think I might also be the first check on One Night in Miami, but I'm less sure about that one. If so, now that it's going to be a Criterion film, that's a cool accomplishment.

Hope you enjoy Mixed-Double! I thought it was very cool.

This sounds indeed highly curious! IMDb also lists Eric Clapton and Vincent Price, making it even stranger.

No one in the film can act except Price, yet Price is in the film for, like, 10 seconds. I guess that's all he was willing to do.

Clapton is only in the film because there's an inserted clip of Blind Faith playing "Well All Right" at a large outdoor show somewhere.

Eleanor Bron also has a minor role, and she was in "Help!" So there's a direct Beatles connection.

https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/ish ... s+to+life/ - Amit Dutta experimental short from his Mubi retrospective.
https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/the ... tree+fell/ - ditto, but this one was boring.

https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/next+level+shit/ - gay comedy short available online. Probably won't care for it unless you've done "butt stuff" before. The title is to be taken figuratively and literally - nothing graphic, but be forewarned. I thought it was hilarious, though.

https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/meatoo/ - queer short from one of the Boys on Film compilations. I had to add it to imdb myself.

https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/frei+bonifacio/ - silent Portuguese short that was recently restored, available to view online here. The Cinemateca Portuguesa is screening a bunch of recently restored films, apparently for a limited time only, but I imagine most will make their way to private trackers eventually.

Serge Livrozet, born in 1939 in Toulon (France) of a plumber and a prostitue, is a french militant, writer and publisher known for his struggle against Quartier de Haute Sécurité (High Security Quarters), death penalty, and more largely against prison during the seventies in France.
He depicts himself as ''an anarchist who does not like bombs''.
Professional safecracker, Serge Livrozet was convicted in the sixties of robbery and incarcerated in Paris and Melun (near Paris), before creating the CAP (Comité d'Action des Prisonniers – Prisoner's Action Commitee) in 1972, creating with Jacques Lesage de la Haye the journal Marge in 1974 – periodical of a particular fringe of the french anarchist-autonomist movement –, taking part in the creation of the french paper Liberation, and actively contributing to Michel Foucault's GIP (Groupe d'Information sur les Prison – Information Group about Prisons).
''SEEDS OF ANARCHY
Anger and unrest. 77 year-old Serge Livrozet may have been a thief, but he has no regrets. He doesn't have to explain himself let alone apologise. Born poor and so 'destined to be exploited', he quite simply and rather naturally decided to 'take money where he thought there was too much'. A crystal clear and solid reasoning. For him 'food delinquency' was a means of channelling the rebel within into an act of political guerrilla warfare. But that doesn’t make him an Arsène Lupin or a Robin Hood. Prison radicalised him and so, full of unwavering courage, he devoted his very existence to standing up to the fuckery of the world. 'Justice, he says, doesn't have to be laudable or harsh; it must be just.'
There isn’t a whiff of vanity in his words which are a medley of tenderness and lucidity, humour and kindness, brio and humility, disillusionment and iron will. Never will the flame of his anger be extinguished. His words are a life lesson despite the fact that this striking pariah considers life itself to be the 'shittiest' of all misfortunes, and perhaps rightly so.
His words leave us so touched because Nicolas Drolc brings them to our ears through the fraternal prism of his own listening ear. The eyes through which he sees Serge Livrozet and the eyes through which he invites us to see him are stripped of both othering and compassion. But Nicolas is showing us no circus attraction, but rather a human-being whom he invites us to love alongside him. There is no room for fooling around with special effects. The portrait he paints is raw and without fanfare or indulgence, steeped in a subjectivity he owns entirely. It is precisely in this rigorous ruggedness that is found a unity, a strength and an offbeat poetry."

https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/walker-1992/ - PSA of sorts by Alanis Obomsawin. Terrible acting, and not typical at all of the director's usually phenomenal work (mind you, she's known for her documentaries). Available on the NFB site.

https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/the+tooth/ - Funny little cartoon ultra short. Available on the NFB site.

https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/26+ ... clamation/ - Half-hour doc on the marathon at the Montréal Olympics. Turned out to be much more interesting and engaging than I had expected; it was the film that had been on my NFB watchlist the longest. Available on the NFB site.

https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/to+ ... n+friends/ - Saw this on Vimeo after someone linked to it on another forum. I can't find the password anymore, unfortunately, nor can I find the original post :( . A Russian doc about lesbians in 1993. Rather good, and recommended, if you can somehow get access to it.

https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/thodu/ - A whole slew of Indian films were expiring on Mubi yesterday. I had already seen a bunch of them, but there were too many for me to catch all of the rest (official and unofficial) and I was feeling tired of film-watching and didn't want to engage in another marathon. I saw this one because it was in Telugu and I couldn't find it elsewhere with subtitles. It was rather maudlin, but at least now I've got a Telugu film under my belt. It felt like an amateur social justice made-for-tv 80s movie (despite being from 1997), with shitty over-obvious acting, intrusive background music, repetitive closeups that started to feel like a fetish, and an overlong runtime. The message of the film was good, though, and the reviews on imdb, Mubi, and Letterboxd are all more positive than mine.

Added it to IMDb, added it to ICM and was the first to check. But I wouldn't wish David Gatten films on anyone. His films are like reading history-book footnotes.

Hmm, didn't realize that. I thought I remembered seeing some stuff on YT that I couldn't see on NFB when I was in Malaysia.

First check: https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/aria+the+avvenire/

I'm surprised I'm the first check, because Aria the Origination has 11 checks, but apparently I'm the first one to watch this OVA.
