They screened it and were supposed to have a discussion afterward, but everyone left right away so didn't get a chance to ask if I could get a copy. It was provided by the same professor from Australia who shared a few other early Indonesian films a few years ago. There are two other checks, but they're both hidden and both dislikes, so I'm pretty sure they're not real (someone went and disliked all of the Indonesian films on the unesco list that aren't readily available). So, good news is that a digital copy of this film exists, with English subtitles, but I don't know how to get a hold of it. I do have a print out they handed to everyone (about 20 people in the audience) with some interesting information about the film, at least. Plus, the copy we saw was shorter than 150 minutes ( I think it was about 2 hours), so I'm not sure if that's an error, if parts were missing, if it's an alternate cut, or what. The film definitely seemed complete to me.

I rated Darah dan Doa a 7.4/10, which is rather good, bordering on great. I liked it slightly better than the only other Indo film from the UNESCO list I've seen; I gave Harimau Tjampa a 7.2/10. I think both films have merit, and theirs inclusion in the list makes sense. Both also deserve a proper restoration that films from other countries from the '50s receive. I also think it's a great example of post-colonial cinema, as it's a film about the Indonesian war for independence, told from the Indo side instead of the Dutch side (and there's a sympathetic German character, so it's got some nuance to it as opposed to "all Europeans are bad" stereotypes).

Christopher Mihm has a series of movies with the same cast and similar concepts. They're all modern versions of 1950s B movies. They're supposed to be funny, but it only manages a laugh or two -usually at the weirdness of the monster (which is usually funny and scary at the same time). If you've seen a Larry Blamire film you'll know what Mihm is trying to do - and not succeeding. But I appreciate the earnest attempts at filmmaking and still want to see more of his films.

Surprised that I'm first. Do you like Negativland? If so, this will be familiar territory. A lot of anti-Vietnam protest and "Yes, We Have No Bananas." Strangely, the film seems to kinda end and resume a few times. I always get a kick of Stan Vanderbeek. He has a sense of mischief that a lot of other experimental filmmakers could use.

Omaha (The Movie)
Pretty decent quirky comedy that I think was only released on a Total Film & Entertainment DVD magazine like 20 years ago.

Disk-O-Tek Holiday a.k.a. Just for You (1964)
Watched on the Something Weird DVD-R. This was a fun MTV precursor that was essentially a series of performances from '60s garage rock and pop bands, most of which you've probably never heard of (I think Frankie & The Dreamers was the only one I had heard of and I'm a huge music nut), stitched together with a very barebones plot about somebody wanting to become a deejay. The DVD also had a couple of shorts from Bill Rebane called Twist Craze (which actually already had several checks surprisingly) and Dance Craze (which wasn't even on IMDB) that showcased...um... dancing.

Watched as part of a Harold Baim DVD set of travelogues that I own.

This was weird, its mostly all about the restoration of the York cathedral. You get to see stained glass window pieces put into a deep fat fryer thing to clean them. Then some guy hammering a stone block, whilst smoking a pipe, while some brassy 70s tunes play. You also get to see a butcher salt a ham shoulder + see the walls surrounding the city. But about 2/3 of this is just about the restoration of the cathedral, which isn't what I was expecting this to be about.
