RYM Top 1001 Albums
So, there exists a published book edited by Robert Dimery entitled, as one might guess by the title of this thread, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Now, an even perfunctory review of the core theses, postulations and exactitudes of this here aforementioned tome would be far too debilitating on these here servers so I will spare us all the heartache of such misfortune and simply state a few saliencies. One: I haven't read the book and will afford myself lucky that I do not have such misfortune as I believe it not to be one of those books one 'reads'. One owns such an exquisite, treasurable item in what one would think to be as much the same transitory state one owns anything but before one has realized it, in some Loveborgesian twist, the book slowly replaces the owner, page by page, until the sublimation completes, and one's loved ones act not as if this exchange took place in the immediate, wholesale, for it is possible they too were affected by its existence in their life, something we should note the very title of the book attempts to control, with neither a request nor a presumption but a command, something we, the unaffected, might, for the time, think a very silly thing of a book to want to do. Two: There is a listification of the latest edition of the book available here, for the moment and will be the focus of my concerns. I hope this step removed from the original text alleviates any potentially heretofore negative effects that same original may have had on me or any others had we succumbed to its pulpy, tactile substantiveness. Also, this list graces us with the absence of any Kings of Leon albums, something preceding editions did not feel uncomfortable enough to preclude. Three colon I will be listening through the music albums of this list until I a. die and fail to heed the desperations of Mister Dimery b. lose any or all desire to listen to any music whatsoever c. forget about the list or d. complete the list. C seems most likely. You here all are free to join me in my no doubt noble, not in the slightest bit inane, pursuits.
EDIT: I'm leaving the above block of text as I found it interesting to write but I am switching from the 1001 list to the RYM list. Anything that makes me not listen to Korn is a good thing. I am currently organizing the top 1001 chronologically. I can post the spreadsheet here when I am done if anyone is interested. Thanks kay love you bye~
The list: https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/album/all-time
As it stands, I plan on listening and reviewing the albums chronologically, listening to one album a day on weekdays (, the flat days) and maybe 4-7 on the weekends. As it is currently a holiday, I plan on listening to a few to begin, while I'm still actively interested. thumbs up party times. First review postings begin later today, Monday, the twenty-fifth of May, in the year of our lord twenty-fifteen.

perhaps it assumes the nature of an 'album' to be something of a cohesive crafted whole rather than a compilation of recorded pieces of music, thus the first album of the list being Frank Sinatra's In the Wee Small Hours, an album recorded with such a concept in mind. but this is pop music we are talking about so who knows.ArthurYanthar on May 25 2015, 02:38:20 AM wrote:Wtf where's the pre-1955 stuff.

Oh man, I just had a look at the list and I am not looking forward to the more recent ones
Bunch of rap and hip hop sounding things and Slipknot. I am delighted to see Django Django and Fleet Foxes though

I did that list once. There is a lack of jazz and I don't get some of the newer albums being on there...but it isn't bad for the most part.
And no Dream Theater. Horrible list indeed. ;)ArthurYanthar on May 25 2015, 04:18:14 AM wrote:Lol no Ornette Coleman or Coil this list sucks.

Lists like these have always suffered from a severe lack of non-English music.
A lack of jazz and non-English music and Arthur doesn't like the list? Then it has to be great!

Also lol they have Korn but not Godflesh...
“I remember being stunned when I heard that first Korn album,” Broadrick said in 2007, “because there’s so much Godflesh in that, but used in this commercial way. It was weird. Like, wow, I guess it had to happen at some point; somebody had to take these sorts of sounds and make them digestible.”
I'll just stop now.

I'm joking, yo.
I have the 2005 print of this book. It's not a bad starting point for exploration but seeing all that nu metal and other questionable new stuff in there and not a single album by the likes of VDGG or Gentle Giant is a disgrace. I'd actually agree that it would make more sense working on the top 1000 from that RYM list Rich linked to, looks like a much more balanced and less crap in there.
Prog is unfairly misrepresented in almost every list. It's like it's a bad word.

as you may or may not have noticed the title change of this thread....
from the OP.
EDIT: I'm leaving the above block of text as I found it interesting to write but I am switching from the 1001 list to the RYM list. Anything that makes me not listen to Korn is a good thing. I am currently organizing the top 1000 chronologically. I can post the spreadsheet here when I am done if anyone is interested. Thanks kay love you bye~
The list: https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/album/all-time
double edit: actually we're going with the top 1001, because I'm locking the list now and that means that Franks Wild Years by Tom Waits is included at #1001.

ha I also listened to In the Wee Small Hours last night. won't post a whole review (it's not on the new list!) but I will say it's interesting how much of a downer that album is without seeming desperate and sweaty like Sinatra's fat years. It's not just that it's a bunch of heartbreak songs but collectively, with the arrangements and Francis's particulars it all comes off quite depressing. except for the broadway show tunes. I'm thinking specifically of the Rogers/Hart tunes, more specifically Glad to Be Unhappy. They really don't blend with the rest of the album. They come off as too talky, like he's not expressing actual emotion, just jabbering at the audience.mightysparks on May 25 2015, 05:18:05 PM wrote:Damn it, I got all excited about the other list - even listened to the first album last night - and now I have to changefunkybusiness on May 25 2015, 05:11:17 PM wrote:as you may or may not have noticed the title change of this thread....

In the Wee Small Hours is the best Frank Sinatra album so there is that. Sinatra and Gardner were broken up and Sinatra was really depressed.

Looked at a few of my favourites. Cryptopsy and even Sparks didn't make the top 1000. A shock that Gorguts is there though I thought that that band is way too inaccessible.
Fortunately 16 Horsepower is there (too bad his other band Woven Hand isn't). David Eugene Edwards is a god.

The only thing is that know that that list changes every week or so...so copy/paste the current top 1001.
