3. La Ciudad y los Perros (1985) Peru
A military academy in Peru, where the hazing is so brutal that it becomes almost burlesque. Strict hierarchies always invite abuse. If you've seen Young Torless, you have a sense of how this is going to go. But none of that makes the drama any less compelling. I've read that this movie is much different from the Llosa source novel, which I'd now like to read.

14. El páramo a.k.a. The Squad (Colombia, 2011)
Surprisingly well-acted and very tense psychological thriller. It feels a little on the long side but I'd say is still worth a watch for those looking for more of a slow-burn horror/thriller.

Image
15. Songs from Bosawas (Nicaragua, 2014)
Pretty neat doc on the journey of some sound engineers to the Nicaraguan rainforest to the put down the first recordings of the indigenous Mayangna people for the first time in history. The white hipster-looking engineer got a little on my nerves but the music they recorded was pretty cool.

16. Downhill (Chile, 2016)
Hm... well, this one is kind of all over the place. First it doesn't seem to want to know if it's a found footage movie or not, randomly switching between the two, especially earlier in the movie. Once the main plot kicks in of the cyclists stumbling across a mysterious virus and some crazy dudes in the woods that want to keep it a secret, the movie starts to go off the rails. The acting is generally not great and there are a lot of character decisions and plot turns that are fairly stupid or inexplicable. I will say that it wasn't boring though, especially toward the end. It ends up a very different kind of movie than I had anticipated. Maybe watch with some friends in a party setting and you might have a good time riffing on it.

OP has just been updated again one more time before the final tally in a couple days. Be sure to check and validate your stats. Lu-Chin continues to have a commanding lead but 2nd place is quite close between jeroeno and sol. Can sol catch up and overtake jeroeno in the final days!?!? Also on the Bonus Challenge front, we've got several people who are close to completing either their first complete run or an additional one. Time for that final push to the finish, folks!

Also, pie:

You're doing a great job hosting and keeping everything interesting  but I don't see myself overtaking jero unless you comb through his viewings and disqualify some of them. :pinch:

Oh, and I fully realise that I am only two films from getting another complete run. Maybe I'll find time for them during the last day of January, but I also have other plans for tomorrow, not to mention one more (like crappy) X-Men film in order to get a 'Completed Collection' in my Letterboxd stats.

18. Blood of the Martyrs (El Salvador, 2017)
Pretty interesting doc that covers the murder of several left-leaning Jesuit priests by the right-leaning El Salvadoran army as well as the the US government's complicity in siding with the Salvadoran government. As you can imagine, it's a grim and depressing story that casts both the El Salvadoran government and military as well the as the George H.W. Bush presidential administration in a very negative light (which is almost certainly warranted).

Image
19. El Xendra (Honduras, 2012)
While this had some interesting and potentially creative sci-fi ideas, it squandered them by poor staging and seemingly endless exposition dumps, especially toward the end.

10. COL - Rodrigo D: No futura (1990) - 4.8 - a movie about as pointless as the violence the director purports to criticize.
11. ECU - La muerte del maestro [Death of the Master] (2018) - 3.4 - a dull film where nothing really happens... and did the master actually die?
12. PER - Kukuli (1961) - 5.6 - interesting as the first Peruvian film, and a glimpse into indigenous Andean culture, but this ethnofiction was not very good - rape a girl and the next moment she loves you? wtf?
13. BOL - Wara Wara (1930) - 7.2 - another "first", but this one was executed better, even if some of the acting and plot were unconvincing.
14. CHL - Cien niños esperando un tren [One Hundred Children Waiting for a Train] (1988) - 8.0 - great doc that was not what I was expecting it to be - managed to criticize the indifference of the elites and educate me on some film history and filmmaking techniques. Loved it!

And I've hit for the cycle after a last-minute sprint (and mixing my sports metaphors). It was a rough spot, but the final few films were a real treat, and I finished on one of the best films of the month for me.
Spoiler

4. NIC - Alsino y el cóndor [Alsino and the Condo] (1982) - 6.2
5. CRC - El hombre cuando es hombre [A Man, When He Is a Man] (1982) - 7.4
6. CRC - Agua fría de mar [Cold Water of the Sea] (2010) - 6.4
7. PAN - Invasión [Invasion] (2014) - 8.0
8. VEN - Pelo malo [Bad Hair] (2013) - 7.8
9. VEN - Azul y no tan rosa [My Straight Son] (2012) - 8.0

4. El Chacal del Nahueltoro (1969) Chile
I didn't like the editing or cinematography, but the story served an effective critique of Chilean society.

Alrighty, folks! I think it's about time to call this one. Hopefully everyone has gotten a chance to post the last of their watches. The OP has been updated and Lu-Chin is our winner! jeroeno blasted ahead to take 2nd place and sol ended up tied with Mario for 3rd. On the bonus challenge front, we had Lu-Chin complete a THIRD run of all the countries in the challenge (except poor ol' French Guiana) which put a lock on their domination of the bonus challenge as well. Fergenaprido picked up a complete run in the final days, so congrats to Ferg, sol and Mario for getting complete runs as well!

And now, let's take a look at that big ol' pie chart:
Image

Not surprisingly, Chile amassed the most viewings, at least partially boosted by the new official list with Colombia taking the second largest chunk, posing a credit threat to Chile's dominance.

I hope everyone enjoyed your jaunt through Central and South America. Have fun frolicking in the Benelux region this coming month!

I think this means that I am the only person who got an "actual" complete run. The French Guiana film I saw wasn't that hard to track down either...
