30. Cherry 2000 (1987, Steve De Jarnatt): 6.5 - In the near future a guy's sex robot breaks down, unfortunately for him they really don't make them as they used to anymore, but luckily there are still Cherry 2000 models in the dangerous Zone, so he hires tracker, who turns out to be a woman played by Melanie Griffith, to take him there... no cigar for guessing who will find out that a real woman is better than a robot. There is a nice subversion of gender role in this by making the tracker female and the male lead behave kind of like a female lead normally does in sci fi action movies. It's all quite enjoyable and moves at a nice pace. Griffith is clearly having fun in her role. The biggest flaw is that the characters are too thin for it's central theme to really pay off.. he seems mostly attracted to her cause she's not a robot and what she sees in him is even more a riddle.

31. Miracle Mile (1988, Steve De Jarnatt): 7.0 - In the 80s there was a kind of subgenre of movies about worst nights of your life, most famous example is Scorsese's After Hours. In this a guy after he arrives hours to late for a date with his dream girl picks up a payphone, only to get some rambling message about how there is a nuclear strike coming. What follows is night that gets more and more anxious while he tries to get his dream girl to safety. It moves at great pace. Anthony Edwards is perfect as the very likable lead. Also lots of kudos for sticking to the realistic and fitting dark romantic ending.
Steve De Jarnatt only made these two movies, which is a shame cause they sure are promosing. Both are clearly products of the 80s, but still differ enough of most 80s genre fare to feel like the work of a director with his own style and vision.

32. Ghostbusters II (1989, Ivan Reitman) rewatch: ? > 6.8 - Definitely a lesser uninspired copy of its predecessor, but still highly watchable mostly because of the likable cast. It does constantly forgets Ernie Hudson is also part of the Ghostbusters.

33. The Howling (1981, Joe Dante): 7.0 - Dante brings an original take on the werewolf movie. It builds suspense well. Might work better not knowing what is about, although with such a title it's difficult not to guess it. This being a Dante film it's full of plenty of references f.e. some characters are named after famous werewolf movie directors.

34. Howling II: Stirba - Werewolf Bitch [Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf] (1985, Philippe Mora): 7.2 - Totally different kind of werewolf horror movie, but contrary to common believe in my view not less, even better. This is highly entertaining absurd pure nonsense.

35. Howling III Howling III: The Marsupials] (1987, Philippe Mora): 4.5 - It redeems itself a bit when instead for going the usual action heavy finale the movie switches gear into depicting the leads living a peaceful secluded life. Turning this from a the typical monster movie into a pro-lycanthrope film. But it is too little too late, cause if that was Mora's intention all along the focus and tone of the movie before was wrong. It also doesn't excuse it from being such poorly made rubbish, that's (unintentional) hilarious at times, and even more unforgivable very dull. The costumes were surprisingly convincing, much better at least than the monkey suits in part II.

36. The 'Burbs (1989, Joe Dante): 6.8 - Dante's horror-comedy satire on the suburbs. Which honestly would have worked better if
Spoiler
it had ended with the neighbors really being innocent and all the menace just a product of the overly active imagination of bored suburbians.

37. Amazon Women on the Moon (1987, Joe Dante, Carl Gottlieb, John Landis, Peter Horton & Robert K. Weiss): 5.8 - Watchable but forgetable comedy sketch anthology movie. Best sketch was Son of the Invisible Man, which is hilarious and perfectly mimics the style of the Universal movies.

38. The Beast Within (1982, Philippe Mora): 7.0

39. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989,Jeremiah S. Chechik): 6.8 - an 80s Christmas movie so that was an easy pick for my Christmas Eve. Enjoyable comedy.

40. Repo Man (1984, Alex Cox) rewatch: 7.5 > 6.5 - Didn't hold up as well as I hoped. HDS is amazing!

41. Sid and Nancy (1986, Alex Cox): 4.8 - While the directing is on par and the acting great, this movies suffers immensely from being absolutely unsympathetic characters, who even before they become obnoxious junkies are already annoying assholes whose whole life seem to be one big adolescent tantrum. Making this a really painful experience for me.

42. Hawk the Slayer (1980, Terry Marcel): 7.2 - Very amusing low-budget fantasy adventure movie

43. Clash of the Titans (1981, Desmond Davis): 6.5

44. 10 to Midnight (1983, J. Lee Thompson): 6.5 - This Charles Bronson vehicle is an interesting mix of a cop and slasher movie. It does have a despicable Right wing pro-vigilante justice ending.

45. Missing in Action (1984, Joseph Zito): 6.5 - This Chuck Norris vehicle has a sufficient amount of enjoyable action, that's adequately shot but unfortunately not impressive enough to lift it up higher from its stereotypical characters, predictable plot, Norris wooden acting and chauvinistic moral.

46. Little Shop of Horrors (1986, Frank Oz): 7.2 - Fun dark comedy with surprisingly catchy songs. Rick Moranis is very likable as the lead. (I watched the Director's cut first and than the original theatrical ending, the last was better imo)
80s Schlock, Masterpieces and everyhing in between
1. Gregory's Girl (1981, Bill Forsyth): 8.0
2. Housekeeping (1987, Bill Forsyth): 8.0
3. Bad Timing (1980, Nicolas Roeg): 5.5
4. Track 29 (1988, Nicolas Roeg): 6.5
5. Happy Birthday to Me (1981, J. Lee Thompson): 7.2
6. Messenger of Death (1988, J. Lee Thompson): 6.0 -
7. Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985, Paul Schrader): 8.0
8. American Ninja (1985, Sam Firstenberg) (rewatch): 10? > 8.0
9. American Ninja 2: The Confrontation (1987, Sam Firstenberg) (rewatch): ? > 7.5
10. American Ninja 3: Blood Hunt (1989, Cedric Sundstrom) rewatch: ? > 6.5
11. The Missionary (1982, Richard Loncraine): 5.8
12. Bellman and True (1987, Richard Loncraine): 5.2
13. Used Cars (1980, Robert Zemeckis): 6.8
14. Eyewitness (1981, Peter Yates): 5.8
15. The Border (1982, Tony Richardson): 6.8
16. Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983. Lamont Johnson): 7.2
17. Vivre Pour Survivre [White Fire] (1984, Jean-Marie Pallardy): 5.8
18. Invasion U.S.A. (1985, Joseph Zito): 5.0
19. Howard the Duck (1986, Willard Huyck): 7.2
20. Black Widow (1987, Bob Rafelson): 6.0
21. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (1988, James Signorelli): 5.0
22. Black Rainbow (1989, Mike Hodges): 6.8
23. Prom Night (1980, Paul Lynch): 3.8
24. Eye of the Needle (1981, Richard Marquand): 7.0
25. Liquid Sky (1982, Slava Tsukerman): 4.2
26. Breathless (1983, Jim McBride): 7.8
27. Nineteen Eighty-Four [1984] (1984, Michael Radford): 7.2
28. Def-Con 4 (1985, Paul Donovan): 6.5
29. The Delta Force (1986, Menahem Golan): 6.8
That's it for me this year. One of my new years resolutions is to update my entries in challenges more frequently.

Time to open a box set:

FTV:10:Cute Girl (1980)6

Later disowning the film (a bit harsh!) writer/directing auteur Hsiao-Hsien Hou teams up with his regular cinematographer of the era Kun-Hou Chen and sketches out future recurring motif's of Taiwan New Wave (TNW) stylisation, underneath the brashly coloured Rom-Com. Driving the romance between the city and country life in extensive TNW outdoor location filming, Hou finds stylish space in the zoom-ins, growing long takes in wide-shots with prominent empty spaces Hou pans over towards the bubbling romance, landing a wonderful sight-gag spoofing the lovers running into each others arms imagery.

Reuniting after he starred in Good Morning, Taipei (1979) (written by Hou) Kenny Bee (whose voice is dubbed by a Taiwanese actor) gives a jaunty, gurning performance as the heart-throb Da-gang,whilst fellow Pop star "The Queen of Hats" Fong Fei-fei pairs her cherry Rom-Com smile as Wen, with a rebellious glance of kicking away the force marriage her parents are trying to set-up.Carving their love in a tree, the screenplay by Hou is one made up of many branches, which never settles on which direction to grow in, at one moment indulging in grating broad Comedy, and then flipping over to sweet nothing teen Rom-Com Drama over who will get with the cute girl.

FTV:11: The Green, Green Grass of Home (1982)7

Reuniting with the film maker after Cute Girl (1980-also reviewed) Pop star Kenny Bee reels in the exaggerated, annoying mannerism of the past, for a nicely understated turn as Da-Nian, who entering the small countryside village as a outsider from the big city (a major recurring theme of the film maker) brings with him a empathetic outlook on the troubled young boys in the school, and a compassion towards teaching the kids and their parents on how not to damage the environment they inhabit. In his last solo writing credit of this era, the screenplay by writer/directing auteur Hsiao-Hsien Hou continues to tread in the gurning Comedy of his first film with a child placing their own poo in a fridge, (thankfully no close-ups) but starts to signal the taking of a more mature direction.

Hou opens up Da-Nian from his learning about the troubles the parents of his students are facing, that swims towards a theatrical (Hou's daughter Yun-hua appears on stage near the end) ecological message about not damaging the countryside,as the big city brings the changes in off the tracks.Joined again by his regular cinematographer of this period Kun-Hou Chen, Hou makes a superb progression in the building of his major recurring motifs, cutting the brash colours of Cute Girl for a more naturalistic atmosphere. Hou sits in the classroom for long takes of static camera moves listening in on Da-Nian's bonding with the students, until Hou releases a final mesmerising shot that places Da-Nian back on the tracks back to the green grass of home.

FTV:12: All the Youthful Days (1983)6

Later calling this his "real" debut, directing auteur Hsiao-Hsien Hou reunites with his regular cinematographer of the era Kun-Hou Chen, and rids himself of the broad "Comedy" element which had never sat at ease in his earlier works.Following the lads into the city, Hou stands back and breaths in the atmosphere with long Taiwan New Wave (TNW) lingering wide-shots backed by naturalistic background sounds over the dialogue, which are broken by swift panning shots over the lads stumbling towards adulthood, (such as getting conned for a "cinema screening" and attempts to kill a chicken slipping out of their hands.)Penning the first of his team-ups with Hou that would continue across all of his other credits, the screenplay by T'ien-wen Chu stays perfectly in step with Hou's graceful mood, giving the dialogue a on the street TNW realism in the brisk exchanges between the boys from Fengkuei.

1982 duo:

FTV:13:Luscious.7.

Image

Getting the chance to direct after spending years being the assistant director for a number of Chuck Vincent’s (who produced the flick, and has a cheerful cameo in the opening) works, Bill Slobodian brings some of Vincent’s distinct sensibility to what was sadly Slobodian’s (who sadly died from AIDS at just 40 years old in 1988) lone directing credit, with Slobodian & Vincent’s regular cinematographer Larry Revene) framing the frisky set-pieces from the perspective of the ladies, via glossy panning shots towards the woman being on top over whispering narration on them fulfilling their desires in a steamy blue lagoon.

Thrusting from the as small as a thong set-up of “Pals go on a sunny holiday”, the screenplay by Vincent’s regular writer Rick Marx thrusts in welcomed comedic escapades, from the friends drunkenly coming up with the holiday idea in their regular pub, which builds to a delightful soft-focus fantasy of Lawrence Carlow IV dreaming he is a secret agent. Getting their hands on Agent Carlow’s weapon, Sue Nero and Sharon Mitchell give fab performances as friends Babette and Nanette, thanks to them tugging their raunch allure with a cheeky smirk at taking down this secret agent on a luscious holiday.

FTV:14:TRON.6.

Image

Raging against the machine from within,Jeff Bridges gives a live-wire turn as Flynn, whose youthful enthusiasm Bridges has Flynn swing against the system, while Bruce Boxleitner programs his performance of Tron with a growing awareness of facing deletion, and David Warner brings a quality touch of boo-hiss 80's British baddie as lead program Sark.Made at a time when Disney were taking big swings in live action (such as the excellent Return To Oz (1985-also reviewed)) that sadly missed at the box office, co-writer/(with Bonnie MacBird and Charles S. Haas) director Steven Lisberger & cinematographer Bruce Logan play the big budget special effects into a retro Cyberpunk atmosphere of Art Deco-lined CGI flying across the mainframe like a updated version of Pong.

Getting served on a plate to them the first score Wendy Carlos had composed since The Shining (1980), the makers sadly completely miss the opportunity to bring a striking stylisation to the set-pieces, by pushing Carlos's Electronic score right to the back of the mix,in order to have the sound effect of a computer hum, be the noise which dries excitement from the action scenes.Investing a huge amount in the appearance of the film, the writers skip putting the same level of investment into the script, which stops/starts at attempts to bring religion (God is in the machine?) into creating a Sci-Fi epic scope, at the drop of a hat, in order to button-bash the failed quips between Flynn and the End of Level Boss.

13. The Hit (1984)
John Hurt, Terence Stamp, and a very young Tim Roth in a noirish road movie. What's not to like?

14. Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983)
This is the second Oshima movie I've seen, after The Ceremony. And like The Ceremony, this movie left me a bit baffled but also feeling like I had seen something wondrous and abstruse. What begins as a quality POW movie in the vein of King Rat becomes something stranger and more psychologically intense. It also had a good score and some of the least believable stage fighting I've ever seen in a movie.

15. Streetwise (1984)
The live of street kids in Seattle. Teenagers without homes make do by pimping, prostituting, dumpster diving, panhandling, and stealing. They're all the products of some parental misfortune: abandonment, drugs, alcohol, prison. In their desperate circumstances, they search for moments of fellowship, pleasure, and even transcendence. The movie begins with one unforgettable scene during which a kid's reverie on his dreams of flight are paired with an image of him jumping off a pier into a harbor. Other joys are less ethereal -- drugs and sex. The lives of these teenagers, all of them living on the liminal edges of society, are as tenuous as they are circumscribed. Public institutions flit around the edges of the story. We see the police in one scene, public clinics in a few others, and eventually a social worker. They pass through the lives of these kids, doing what they can, which doesn't appear to be much. It reminded me in some ways of my experience as a student teacher in West Harlem, where a more veteran teacher explained the public mission thusly: "Fake it till you make it." The movie also made me think of my grandfather, born in present-day Belarus (then pre-collapse Roman Empire) and kicked out of his home by his father when he was 13. He traveled to the big city (Warsaw) and arrived friendless, poorly educated, and impoverished. Somehow he made something of himself and, despite immense odds, gave a better life to my father. The teenagers of Streetwise for the most part don't have such good fortune, either in the movie or in the years since its release. An utterly heartbreaking documentary of the highest quality. Added to my 500<400 list.

April Challenge: Image
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

07. Samson og Sally -- Hastrup, 1984.
08. A Prayer for the Drying -- Hodges, 1987.

Mickey Rourke plays an I.R.A. hitman with a heart of gold who wants to give up killing. I can't assess how good his accent was, but it didn't stand out as awful to me. Bob Hoskins is great (as usual) as a priest who inadvertently witnesses a hit.

That's it for me -- thanks for hosting, shugs!!!
