214. Night Work (1939, George Archainbaud) - 5/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- The wonderful comic pair of Charles Ruggles & Mary Boland are at it again. This time trying to officially adopt Donald O'Connor, who they've taken care of for a while. However they've got to convince his grandfather they're tough enough for the task, and that takes some convincing when you're "wishy-washy" Ruggles. Very simple comic set-up, with professional execution from those involved. Fun.


215. Young Man's Fancy (1939, Robert Stevenson) - 4/10
--- Kind of hard not to appreciate a movie where a man falls in love with a human cannonball, for this was both elegant and lively. But the overall story failed to fully engage me. Fuzzy a lot of the time, even if individual scenes were good.


216. Three Sons (1939, Jack Hively) - 5/10
--- Remake of Sweepings (1933), a sentimental business drama where a man spends his whole life building up a department store he hopes his sons will take over, except they're not interested. It's a good unspectacular drama with a few short-cuts. Good one for character actor Edward Ellis, who has to fill the shoes of Lionel Barrymore, who did the original. He does fine. Neither better nor worse than the '33 adaptation.


217. The Gang's All Here (1939, Thornton Freeland) - 5/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Apparently Alfred Hitchcock agreed to direct this, but signed with David O Selznick and went to Hollywood instead. A crime scenario with quite a bit of humor, something I could see Hitchcock get something out of. However since it's American director Thornton Freeland, during his British period, handling this project, it becomes something completely different to what you'd expect a Hitchcock to be. Freeland's end result is something a lot more standard, low on detail, and straight forward production wise. The timing and polish you'd have in a Hitchcock movie is nowhere to be seen. So in that regard this is more like a hack job than the special Jack Buchanan attraction this looks on paper.

With that said, this is a entertaining one. What makes it stand-out is the number of Hollywood imports. They brought over poverty row villain Jack La Rue, B-movie slickster Otto Kruger and A-list comic relief Edward Everett Horton. And Horton was put to good use here as Buchanan's valet/assistant. I would say Horton actually steals this from the local British star.


218. Me and My Pal (1939, Thomas Bentley) - 4/10
--- British slapstick from Charlie Chaplin wannabe Dave Willis. Totally goofy, especially when considering a lot of this type of humor had been out-of-date since the silent era. Plenty of verbal gags, something you'd expect from Laurel & Hardy. However Willis is none of those, so it comes across 3rd rate while also providing laughs. Many of them tired laughs, but laughs nonetheless.


219. Risky Business (1939, Arthur Lubin) - 5/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- I recognized the early scenes without researching this, and it's pretty much a direct remake of Okay America! (1932). Pure routine, but a routine old Hollywood was so great at. Typical tight programmer storytelling and George Murphy gives his part credibility. Solid filler release.


220. Pride of the Blue Grass (1939, William C. McGann) - 4/10
--- Story of a horse and the family that owns it. It's fine, but I'm rarely interested in stories of this nature. Something about horses that bores me. Trying not to take it out on the actual film making, but there wasn't anything original to the formula either. Just a acceptable release.


221. A Desperate Adventure (1938, John H. Auer) - 3/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Republic Pictures hiring once-a-superstar Ramon Novarro for a light melodrama. But by this point Novarro had lost all his allure as a screen idol and this picture was just as dull as his personality came across.


222. The Higgins Family (1938, Gus Meins) - 4/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- The Higgins Family (1938), the first of the Higgins movies. They made 9 films in the series from 1938-1941, and it originally starred the Gleason Family. James Gleason and his wife Lucile Gleason, along with their less famous son Russell Gleason. Fun for what it was, which is prototype sitcom stuff with dysfunctional family troubles which ends in total chaos. Not amazing, but has its moments. This is the only film from the series I've been able to find, so i hope i'll eventually find more. Mainly because I'm a fan of James Gleason, and it's nice to see him get to work with the rest of the family.


223. The Kid Comes Back (1938, B. Reeves Eason) - 4/10
--- Made before, but released after the successful Kid Galahad (1937) where Wayne Morris also played a naive boxer. Not nearly as fun, but it's a likable little programmer if only looking for something to pass the time. Got Barton MacLane, so it's has some heavyweight personality there.


224. California Frontier (1938, Elmer Clifton) - 5/10
--- Solid Buck Jones outing out west. There are some nice dramatic touches, though, the film is naturally rushed to fit the hour format. Doesn't stop it from being a effective one.


225. Road Demon (1938, Otto Brower) - 4/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Had a hollow ambiance, very much of the B-picture mold. Most intriguing thing about Road Demon (1938) is it being "Bojangles" Bill Robinson final appearance during his initial Hollywood run, though he would return for Stormy Weather (1943). Didn't give him anything memorable to do unfortunately, except for a short garage dance. The lead went to a guy called Henry Arthur, who only did five movies during his brief spell in movies. Bland guy. So for a overdose of personality we had Henry Armetta doing the "Luigi" shtick, even being called Luigi! He was 'a veeery Italiano.

That's it for me for this challenge. Finished what I had left of 1946 half-way though. I thought I was going to start on '47, but ended up finding a massive vault of big studio B-movies I hadn't seen before on vk.com. Had time to watch over a hundred of those before this month was up and I only had time to search 1938 to 1945. I still have 1937 and backwards to go, so we're probable talking another hundred movies before I'm done checking years I've already "finished". Filling in a lot of holes in my filmography. Especially for Universal and Colombia pictures. For 80 of those 225 films I was the first to check on ICM. Anyway, it's been fun doing a challenge that suits my viewing habits, and it's been a long while since I saw that many films during a month!

The second entry in one of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's lesser known franchises. It's not too surprising the Suit Yourself of Shoot Yourself films never became a big success, it is after all a series of Japanese TV films. The lighter tone, the excellent cast, consistent quality and short runtimes make this a franchise well worth exploring. Yûji's latest assignment involves tailing the daughter of a Yakuza boss. He finds out the girl is hooking up with a boy in secret, something her father doesn't appreciate in the least. After this discovery, he offers Yûji a big lump sum of money if he captures the boy and brings him in. Show Aikawa is a great lead, with actors like Sabu and Ren Osugi backing him up Kurosawa was able to assemble a great cast. The film isn't too serious, the story isn't dragged out unnecessarily and even though it lacks a little visual flair, the entertainment value is high. A solid entry in a solid series.



53. 3.0* - Run by Aneesh Chaganty (2007)

A very decent Munchausen by proxy inspired thriller. Run is certainly not the first of its kind, also not a film that is trying to push the boundaries of the genre, but if you're looking for quality filler thrillers this is exactly the kind of film that will disappoint few people, which is also worth something. Chloe was born too early, because of that she suffers from several illnesses and conditions. Her mom takes good care of her, she even homeschools Chloe. When one day she comes home with a new medicine, Chloe begins to suspect something is off, and she launches an investigation to find out what the pills are for. The first half is by far the most interesting. As long as the mystery remains intact, there's enough tension to keep you on the edge of your seat. Once the twists and reveals start rolling in, the film loses steam, not in the least because there's nothing particularly original about the revelations. The presentation is pretty decent but nothing noteworthy, the same goes for the performances. Not a bad film, solid entertainment, but a bit light.

I'm so ecstatic and thankful that this has been subbed and so glad too that you appear to have loved it, jd. I shall have to watch it again soon to refresh my memory of it. I cherish the poignancy and humanity that is seen in these two little girls during these wartime struggles, with their dedication and dutifulness but also their childish side evident in wonderings, explorations, brief moments of playfulness.

I just watched a very special one from Miguel Morayta last night, after seeing your high ratings for his films. Thanks so much for allowing me to remember the director at this time of year! I don't think I liked 'Hipócrita..!' (1949) quite as much as you, but this subsequent one (that I'll name and log here later, haahaa) really hit me hard.

Hi Roger, yes, I was so glad I was able to see one of your DtC nominees, 'Zhila-byla devochka' (and with Spanish subs!). Poignancy and humanity as you say, from every filmic pore, and the girls are absolutely lovely, but it's the landscape I'll remember most - that Griffithian traverse of one of the girls in search of water under that frozen, grueling weather, and the broken, weathered people and faces she sees, I almost congealed myself, or those empty, bombed houses still filled with little memories and mementos (dolls, photographs, pieces of bread), I found it all a very physical, sensorial experience.

Oh, Morayta has been one of my favorite discoveries of the month! I haven't seen that one you saw (I'll wait for your post), but the two I saw are apparently part of a trilogy highlighting the monstrous and the mutilated (both the City as an engulfing monstrous metaphor and characters as physically mutilated - hooked arms, scarred faces, leprosy); they were absolutely fascinating, especially 'Camino del infierno' one of my favorite Noir viewings this month (and what a stunning, impressive actress Leticia Palma was!).

PS : I watched Yip Man 4, thinking it wouldn't be on any list, but I was surprised to find out it got to the box-office list, when neither the 2nd of 3rd did... In any case is wasn't a bad watch, not really great, but I found it to conclude nicely the Yip Man series.

Oh, Morayta has been one of my favorite discoveries of the month! I haven't seen that one you saw (I'll wait for your post), but the two I saw are apparently part of a trilogy highlighting the monstrous and the mutilated (both the City as an engulfing monstrous metaphor and characters as physically mutilated - hooked arms, scarred faces, leprosy); they were absolutely fascinating, especially 'Camino del infierno' one of my favorite Noir viewings this month (and what a stunning, impressive actress Leticia Palma was!).

Haha, yes. You must have been wondering what I was rabbiting on about in my original post, prior to my editing it. I was browsing your MUBI page, jd, and got your Favourites and your Watchlist mixed up, which made me think erroneously that you had seen the film I then set out to watch. Bit of a mix-up in my befuddled mind, but that of course leaves 'Camino del infierno' as such a tantalising future viewing. I can't wait for Noirvember 2021. Palma is such a great and attention-holding presence!

135. Une colonie a.k.a. A Colony (2018)
A Colony captures the pain of being young and apart from what's perceived to be normal. It reminds me at times of the film Eighth Grade in how it captures the awkwardness and insecurity of a teen but is magnified by creating a more concrete sense of place in a rural Québécois community. While Mylia's journey of becoming her own person is an interesting one, the most unique thing about this one is the character of Jimmy as an aboriginal descendent and how he is visibly uncomfortable with how he fits into society at times and how his people are perceived. The scene in the history classroom where he lashes out at students for reading a passage from an early explorer's journal denigrating the native culture as simple is particularly fascinating and well done.


136. Nightkill (1980)
When a woman's husband is murdered by her lover and Robert Mitchum shows up to investigate, she understandably starts to panic. This twisty neo-noir thriller isn't bad but the directing feels very flat and a little on the lazy side. Some elements of the script are also kind of silly, but at this point I expect that. Still, it's not awful.


137. Town on Trial (1957)
Fine performances and a well-written polished script make this British whodunnit a pleasure to watch. The general plot is a little generic but it's executed very well with a steady hand and clean pacing.


138. This Is Not a Movie (2011)
What the hell was this?


139. The Tie That Binds (1995)
Darryl Hannah and Keith Carradine are unstable criminals who have their daughter taken away after being cornered by the cops. The daughter is adopted while the criminals go on the run but soon they seek to reclaim from the adoptive parents what's theirs. What follows is a psychological crime thriller that's fairly predictable but decently executed despite some of the more ridiculous plot points.


140. The Laughing Policeman (1973)
Very good, gritty police thriller with Walter Matthau and Bruce Dern. Recommended.


141. Boogie, el aceitoso (2009)
Ludicrously over-the-top, hyper-violent animated movie from Argentina about a misogynist psychopath who is somehow supposed to be the good guy? Honestly, he's so relentlessly unlikeable I didn't get much enjoyment out of it.


142. Invisible Stripes (1939)
Solid crime flick with George Raft trying to go straight but his old buddy played by Bogey getting him mixed up all over again.


143. Doubles vies a.k.a. Non-Fiction (2018)
I've liked some of Olivier Assayas' films like Personal Shopper and Irma Vep, and while this one certainly has less of a narrative than many of his other films, it does share a certain fixation on these kind of flighty obsessed characters that tend to rub me the wrong way at times. While previous films had aspects of this kind of character, Non-Fiction is essentially a parade of these people, insufferable upper middle class socialites who seem to have little of interest to say about their first world problems. At times it feels like Whit Stillman trapped in a mid-life crisis. I also got the sense that Assayas thought the whole thing was just so clever. "Let's have a character ask Juliet Binoche for Juliet Binoche's e-mail address! Genius!"


144. The Sister-in-Law (1974)
This sleazy crime drama finds everybody sleeping with everybody and a diamond-smuggling plot gone bad. Poorly shot, poorly edited, poorly acted with a pointless, very '70s nihilistic ending.

The first time (since watching Springsteen's 'Hellfire' some months ago) that I have cried while watching the dénouement to a film. Interesting that they both deal with religion! It shows that the sacredness, morality & reverence of such themes can invoke an awe in even a (passive) atheist like me. I thought of Dostoyevsky as the voice-over dropped us into this red-light district, where people do what they can and must to survive. The creation of the milieu is so very effective (railway tracks, night-time streets, the clubs, scheming gangsters, girls still with hope in their hearts for success and escape). I shall cherish Leticia Palma's performance. She's strong, caring, sexy, compassionate and the heartbeat of this darkly touching fable. One scene that broke my heart: her dancing in this seedy watering hole and dreaming that she is performing in far-removed luxurious surrounds, only to have her reverie broken by a splash of water/beer in the face and a drunken, mocking guffaw. Another scene that stunned and moved me: the slimy culprit being set upon by raggedy-clothed locals; their slow, deliberate movements play almost like a zombie attack on a victim. It is a haunting, disconcerting scene! And the close with these two souls (priest and girl) seeking escape and happiness, and the church bells that bring revelation and realisation. A minor masterpiece that touched and moved me deeply.
