Featuring an unusual protagonist in a deaf-mute assassin, this is intriguing from the get-go and Pawarith Monkolpisit is great, but the movie pulls in two diverse directions. There is a really sweet romance angle with some great moments as he communicates with his girlfriend without either of them knowing sign language. There is also a revenge subplot though that gradually overtakes the entire film. Things get real sentimental towards the end too.

Described by many as Vietnam's answer to Taken, this action thriller is more than just that with a female protagonist here and so much neon lighting that the film has also drawn comparisons to John Wick. The naturalistic lighting in the initial countryside makes a wonderful contrast against the harsh neon of the Big City, the actresses playing both mother and daughter are solid, and there is some great comic relief too (leaving a hospital US style).

Various Malaysians are interviewed here about an incident in 1987 in which a soldier gunned down various civilians and sparked city-wide panic. With the soldier's motives unknown, the film asks its interviewees to speculate and some of the theories are wild, ranging to racial hatred, to the influence of First Blood, to the possibility that the soldier's brother was killed by a sultan. Lots of humour, but the whole thing feels sprawling and unfocused.

And that's it for me. Thanks for hosting, Melv -- 38 viewings places me equal third with jdidaco, who I am happy to share the honour with. B)

And there we go, I made my goal of 10:
Spoiler
1. Lewat Djam Malam / After the Curfew(1954, Usmar Ismail) - Indonesia
2. Thuong nho dong quê / Nostalgia for Countryland (1995, Dang Nhat Minh) - Vietnam
3-5. Ong Bak 1-3 (2003-2010) - Thailand
6. Mùa hè chieu thang dung / The Vertical Ray of the Sun (2000, Anh Hung Tran) - Vietnam
7. Fah talai jone / Tears of the Black Tiger (2000, Wisit Sasanatieng) - Thailand

8. Ruined Heart: Another Lovestory Between a Criminal & a Whore (2014, Khavn) - Philippines

Image

Now this was simply a visual feast! Perhaps the closest I have come to experience a pure mood piece. Christopher Doyle is the cinematographer, and he gets to play around with completely different styles as this music driven madness starts taking off. There is almost no dialogue. In many ways it feels like a 70 minute music video - as our protagonists dance, have sex and kill.

We get introduced to 5 characters - lover, criminal, whore, friend and godfather - as well as "pianist", which is Khavn himself. These characters will wander, run and hide - including near delirious hand-held running scenes, as the visual expression seems to change as an engagement metric in its own right. Never seen another Khavn film, but I am thoroughly impressed, not just by his direction, but for also being behind the score. While many may find this slight, and style for the style of style - anyone who enjoys style should not be disappointed. 8/10.

9. Invisible Waves (2006, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang) - Thailand

Image

A slow, cold, minimalist drama centered around a chief, forced to murder his lover and go on the lamb. Ratanaruang, already a bit of a cult sensation with 6ixtynin9 and Last Life in the Universe really shot for the moon here, teaming up with Christopher Doyle (yes, second in a row) and Japanese star Tadanobu Asano (Ichi the Killer) - and creates and unease and awkward experience - where we for large parts of the film simply spend it with our protagonist, living life on an essential ghost cruise ship - with awkward and shy conversations in English. We get some miscommunication humour, some lose humour, and, at times, suspense. I have to give it to the film; the climax certainly hits home, and is remarkably memorable, but the rest of the film could not quite win me over. Even Doyle's photography simple feels gray and flat - part of the mood of course, but he seems misused here. 6/10.

10. Mah nakorn / Citizen Dog (2004, Wisit Sasanatieng) - Thailand

Image

Wisit Sasanatieng follow up to Tears of the Black Tiger is yet another visually creative and delightful tale, that may bear some resemblance to Amelie. Here we follow a "country bumpkin" and a cleaning woman through their dreams and misadventures, complete with over the top wacky humour. I laughed out loud several times, but it also becomes slightly meandering and over-silly as it continues. Thoroughly fun viewing however, and while very different from the atmosphere of Tears of the Black Tiger, fans should certainlyconsider looking it up. 7/10.

Gloriously tacky, and shows the power of set design over cinematography. Don't get me wrong, the colours are captured nicely, and there is some great play with saturation to really give us the feeling of classic film shortcomings: but the star here is the colours. We are presented with great pink buildings, and a colour palette you'd not expect to see in a western. Meanwhile the tropes are brought in left right and center, including a Taiwanese Southern Belle (for all intents and purposes). Playing out as a meta melodrama and genre parody, but one that breaths and has a life on its own. "Parody" is actually the wrong word altogether. Yes, it may have some superficial similarities to how OSS 117 takes on Bond and Eurospy films, but it turns it into a love letter to an epoch that never was, and an exercise in style that truly stands on its own. 8/10.
:poshclap:

If you liked the first Ong-bak, be sure to check out Tom Yum Goong (Muay Thai Fighter | Honour of the Dragon | Warrior King | The Protector - whatever they called it in English). After that Tony Jaa became a little too full of himself (which led to the messy Ong Bak sequels), but Tom Yum Goong is probably a bit better still.
Cheers, Onderhond, and cheers again for the 3 recommendations above as well. I almost caught it, but as the month is over I'll catch it next time I'm in a martial arts mood (which granted, is rare, but I really enjoyed it in Ong-bak).

I think there's a martial arts challenge next year, so I'm sure you'll get around to it. Glad to see you found at least something interesting in each of the recommends. Ruined Heart is my personal favorite from the three, so we're at least quite aligned there. Don't quite agree that Doyle's wasted on the style in Invisible Waves (it worked perfectly for The White Girl too), but I get it's a bit of a shock as you're probably more used to his work for Kar-Wai.

Also, after seeing Citizen Dog and Tears of the Black Tiger, you may understand why this accidental shots is one of my most treasured pics from our vacation to Thailand (a shot inside the train that rides across the River Kwai bridge). :D

Beautifully shot in bright colors and mostly taking place on what seems to be a salt flat with mountains in the distance, this is the kind of film that shows in museums and pisses off the more prosaically minded, and gets people like me called "art-fag". Well whatever, I dug it.
This was filmed in the area near Mount Pinatubo a few years after the massive eruption in the '90s. I'm not sure if the landscape in the film is hardened lava, ground that was covered in ash, or just an area that was rendered almost a wasteland because of the eruption.

I'm too drained to watch a movie tonight, so this is my last update. Didn't manage to hit 10. Oh well.

6. Santet [Witchcraft] (1988) Indonesia 90 min - 4.2/10 - one of the better Putra-Suzzanna films, but still bad :D

7. Zombi Kampung Pisang [Zombies from Banana Village] (2007) Malaysia 93 min - 2.8/10 - Apparently this was a decent hit in Malaysia when it came out, and it's billed as the first Malaysian zombie movie (KL Zombi came out later, and I think had more success). It was laughably bad, with a convoluted back story, bad acting, and cringe-inducing characters. The only two entertaining parts for me were 1) two scenes where the main character breaks the fourth wall to give PSA-like monologues to the camera before being reminded that he is still in danger, and 2) a group of zombies attempting to attack a 12-14-year-old boy at home and utterly failing each attempt. I don't know how this film spawned 4 sequels.

8. Wanita Harimau: Santet II [Tiger Woman] (1989) Indonesia 88 min - 2.8/10 - a needless sequel which amps up the religious rhetoric and engages in perpetuating the stereotype of women being spiritually and morally weak. Some terrible sepcial effects, even by Putra film standards.

9. Pengabdi Setan [Satan's Slave] (1982) Indonesia 92 min - 6.0/10 - the best of the 11 Putra films I've seen, perhaps. This one doesn't star Suzzanna, doesn't rely on bad effects to move the story along, and is a remake of an American film (though heavily infused with local legends and religion). I didn't find it even remotely scary, but I'm not complaining.

Spoiler
1. L'image manquante [The Missing Picture] (2013) Cambodia/France 96 min
2. Misteri Janda Kembang [Mystery of the Merry Widow] (1991) Indonesia 69 min
3. Sibak [Midnight Dancers] (1994) Philippines 118 min
4. Hua jai tor ra nong [The Adventures of Iron Pussy] (2003) Thailand 90 min
5. Puting Paalam [The White Funeral] (1997) + Oliver (1983) Philippines 30 min + 39 min

None for me anymore, had to focus on horror the last few days. Had to. Thanks for running it Melvelet! Wish I could have gotten to more, but my watchlist is probably too big for three challenges in this area at this point. I particularly wish I'd gotten to some earlier Indonesian and Thai films, a few more from the smaller national cinemas, and done some concentrating on Filipino directors Brocka, Mendoza, and Khavn. Oh well, next time, or some other time. Great month in any case.

I was done with this one a couple of days ago. I ordered some more S. Asian horror but it didn't get here in time and frankly I was ready for some classic Universal horrors anyway. Thanks for hosting, melvelet, and for including running times as a bonus. You somehow recorded my final tota incorrectlyl - I'm at 31 films watched, not 38.
